Udawalawe is one of Sri Lanka’s most rewarding wildlife destinations and is especially famous for its large population of wild elephants. The open grasslands, forests and reservoir landscapes provide excellent opportunities to observe elephants, water buffalo, deer, crocodiles and a wide variety of birdlife in their natural environment. The nearby Elephant Transit Home also offers visitors an opportunity to learn about the rehabilitation and conservation of orphaned elephants before they are returned to the wild.
